39 Steps Synopsis and Credits

"One of the greatest and best-loved of all
Alfred Hitchcock's spy thrillers."

- Peter Thompson, Peter Thompson Reviews

Richard Hannay is a Canadian visitor to London. At the end of "Mr. Memory's" show in a music hall, he meets Annabella Smith who is running away from secret agents. He consents to hide her in his flat, but in the night she is murdered. Fearing he could be accused on the girl's murder, Hannay goes on the run to break the spy ring.

Adapted from the most popular John Buchan novel of 1915, this riveting, fast-paced thriller stars Robert Donat as Richard Hannay, a man accursed of a crime he didn't commit. After giving refuge to a mysterious woman in his London flat, Hannay discovers that she has been murdered and he is the number one suspect.

Sought by the police and the real killer, Hannay escapes and, based on a single clue, heads to Scotland in search of Professor Jordan (Godfrey Tearle), the mastermind of an insidious spy ring.

Narrowly avoiding capture again, Hannay eludes his pursuers with the help of a beautiful woman, Pamela (Madeline Carroll), whom he met on the train. The web of intrigue continues to wrap tightly around Hannay as he tries to clear his name of the murder and foil the espionage plot before he becomes the next victim.

"The Thirty-Nine Steps is a fun, engaging,
and witty piece of classic cinema."

- Matthew Bull, Edinburgh University Film Society
